Something's Gotta Give

Perhaps you've listened to economists recite statistics about increasing productivity and state how this is an important measure of our economic health. Productivity is the measure of goods and services generated per labor unit (time). What it really means is that more and more will be expected from you in the future. There is no question that information technology (computers and software) and intelligent microprocessor-based instruments like infrared cameras are having an enormous impact on worker productivity. But there has been an equal, if not greater, trend to simply remove people from organizations. How often do you reach a receptionist when calling a company? How difficult is it to reach a customer service agent when you need one?

I hear all the time about cuts in maintenance staff or how PMs are going to be outsourced. Yet I very rarely hear about maintenance programs that are successful or are recognized by management for a program's return on investment. Something's gotta give since the demands for equipment reliability aren't going away. For our part we will continue to focus on solutions that use advanced software to automate inspection through easier and more intuitive data collection, and automatic report generation so operators can spend my cycles on the floor performing inspections and repairs.

Arc Flash Awareness Grows

Survey finds 86% of respondents aware of NFPA 70E. Find out what NFPA 70E may mean for you!

There continues to be a great deal of activity surrounding the update to NFPA 70E scheduled to be published in October 2008. For the proposed 2008 edition of NFPA 70, National Electrical Code® (NEC®), the Technical Correlating Committee (TCC) received 3,668 proposals and 3,206 comments during the revision cycle. For those of us involved in working with energized electrical circuits the outcome of the new standards will likely impact how we do our job. The goal is to increase safety through well thought through practices.

Causes of Arc Flash
Accidental contact with energized parts
Wiring errors
Inadequate short circuit ratings
Contamination, such as dust on insulating surfaces
Tracking across insulation surfaces
Corrosion of equipment parts and contacts
Tools dropped on energized parts
Improper work procedures

According to John Snell of Snell Infrared (www.snellinfrared.com), "Thermographers who would like to comment on the standard should review the current edition and complete a comment form found in the back of the standard (Please remember, it is vital to use the format provided). Comments can also be submitted online at NFPA70E Forum and are due no later than August 31, 2007."

nfpa industry survey results

 

Reliability Web conducted an industry-wide survey on Infrared Surveys and NFPA 70E. Over 160 industry representatives participated in the survey, and the results clearly show the high level of awareness of NFPA and how companies currently address (or not) inspecting energized electrical apparatus.

This survey was produced and conducted by ReliabilityWeb.com (on the web at www.reliabilityweb.com), with the assistance and guidance of Stockton Infrared Services (www.stocktoninfrared.com).
