AstroScope Called Into Action for Devil's Brigade Documentary

"Devil’s Brigade" video clip courtesy of Frantic Films

Early in WWII, the Allies suffered terrible tactical setbacks. President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill recognized that they must turn the tide and actively engage in offensive operations against the Germans. The elite 1st Special Service Force, a.k.a. the "Devil's Brigade", was formed in 1942 to meet the challenge. Assembled from both American and Canadian military units, 2,300 men were hand-picked for their rugged, outdoor backgrounds.

At Fort William Henry Harrison in Montana, the special operations unit received the most rigorous training ever undertaken by North American troops. Their specialized instruction included raider and commando tactics, mountaineering, skiing, parachuting, demolitions, weapons, and hand-to-hand combat. At Anzio, the Force earned a unique distinction for their black camouflage face-paint and legendary ferocious night-time fighting ability. The disheartened Germans named them "Die Schwartze Teufeln" (The Black Devils). The legacy and spirit of this distinguished unit proudly lives on today in the special forces of both North American countries.

History Television and Frantic Films produced the "Devil's Brigade" television series to honor those men and to illustrate what the 1st Special Service Force accomplished and the hardships they faced. Specializing in night-time reconnaissance and combat, the members of this elite force were a terror to their enemies and hence were nicknamed "The Black Devils". History now remembers them as "The Devil's Brigade".

To capture the dramatic and compelling night-time footage, Frantic Films turned to Electrophysics for our unique night vision solution.

The AstroScope enabled the film crew to capture the highest quality low light imagery under real combat field conditions using their professional broadcast video cameras.
