FROM THE EDITOR

The True Value of Human Capital

For many electronics products, a great deal of attention is paid to what products cost. The pace of price deflation in flat panel TVs, music players, computers and video games is staggering. Certainly, the drop in pricing has greatly expanded the market for each of these products. Similarly, as a developer of highly-engineered electronic test and measurement products, we too seek to leverage the ever-increasing power of silicon products like microprocessors and memory into lower-priced products designed for industrial users.

With the enthusiasm over falling equipment costs, there is a temptation to reduce the investment in the training of technicians who are expected to operate these test and measurement systems with their increasing capability. The costs of labor as well as the associated travel and training don't follow Moore's Law (an empirical observation about how the number of transistors on an IC for minimum component cost doubles every 24 months), so the cost of operators can be a very significant cost of the use of test equipment.

By neglecting the cost of properly training operators, are buyers "penny wise and dollar foolish"? When evaluating the success or failure of a test program, it is important to realize that any tool is only as useful as the skill of its user. This is as true of a hammer as it is a thermography camera. Investing in developing skills is the key to program success. People and skills are the key ingredient in any successful endeavor.

Integrating CMMS/EAM Systems with Your Thermography Program

As EAM (Enterprise Asset Management) and CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) get implemented at an ever-increasing number of facilities, the demands for data acquisition increases. More is expected from traditional PdM modalities including thermography, vibration, alignment, oil analysis and ultrasonic inspection—including better organized data capture, the creation of metrics and scheduling.

Concepts like route-based inspections and comprehensive data collection are now being fielded, and new tools that integrate PdM tools like thermography, with computerized maintenance programs, can make the whole process of data gathering easier and can be a critical factor in the overall success of any reliability program.

Electrophysics Harley Davidson Sweepstakes

We Have a Winner!

Billy Richards of Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC) — Oklahoma's largest locally-owned power supply system

Electrophysics performed a live drawing of all sweepstakes entries that had been entered from April, 2005 through December 2006 at the International Maintenance Conference, in Daytona Beach on December 6, 2006.

"While looking at the new HotShot thermal imaging camera (which is a great camera) on Electrophysics' home page, I took the time to fill out the "Win A Harley Sweepstakes", thinking I would never have a chance of winning. I would like to thank Electrophysics for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that happened to me. I am now the proud winner of a new 2007 Harley Davidson. Thank you again Electrophysics."

Congratulations to Billy Richards, and we thank everyone for their participation in this event.
