Electrophysics' AstroScope is an advanced Gen III Night Vision adapter specifically designed for photographic and video applications. Unlike pocketscope-based night vision setups, AstroScope enables you to use your existing professional-quality lenses to shoot full frame images at distances beyond 1000 meters! Operating seamlessly with your camera, AstroScope passes all communication signals between the camera body and lens. Now, critical features like image stabilization work when you really need them.

In wide use with US Military and Law Enforcement organizations, AstroScope is the performance leader. When you need to get the shot, AstroScope delivers.

From the Editor

Night Vision has become a buzzword given the military operations oversees and the domestic demands to safeguard the public and secure potential terrorist targets. For over 20 years Electrophysics has designed high-performance yet simple-to-use night vision products.

Our Astroscope series of night vision modules are the worldwide standard, and we have recently completed development of our 3rd generation system designed specifically for today's megapixel digital SLR cameras. Specialization breeds unique advantages to the task at hand. Whether for gathering intelligence or evidence, Electrophysics Astroscope produces the finest nighttime images. If you're interested in night vision image capture we encourage you to contact us to learn how we can help.

Today we are expanding our technology offering to include thermal imaging products and infrared illuminators. We hope you will read more on the ALS laser diode infrared illuminator that has the power to light up over 15 acres, and the new Jade LR (Long Range), featuring a triple field-of-view lens that can identify a vehicle at over 15 kilometers!

AstroScope incorporates a state-of-the-art image intensifier that transforms dark scenes (starlight/moonlight) into bright, high-resolution images. Electrophysics has always provided the highest quality night vision imaging solutions available. Now we are pleased to offer the aviation-grade Central Intensifier Unit, the highest performance Gen III Image Intensifier in the world! See the difference an aviation-grade Central Intensifier Unit can make, providing the highest resolution, the best signal-to-noise, and the most effective anti-blooming technology available.

AstroScope's modular design enables you to easily transfer the Central Intensifier Unit between imaging platforms including digital SLR, Canon XL2, fixed-lens camcorders, C-Mount CCD cameras, and a long-range portable scope.

Unlike pocketscope-based night vision setups, AstroScope delivers the sharpest detail and the highest quality full-frame images with no vignetting on most platforms.

Electrophysics' ALS infrared illuminators are designed for large area (up to 15 acres) and long-range covert lighting applications. Incorporating a high-power laser diode and patented optic, ALS illuminators deliver the highest output available while achieving a Class 1 eye safety rating (IEC-60825-1).

A range of fixed beam widths are available to meet specific applications. Laser diode-based illuminators deliver exceptional low-life cycle costs, even illumination, and are the perfect compliment to many CCTV surveillance systems based on monochromatic cameras. ALS is a cost-effective alternative to thermal imaging cameras.

Electrophysics' Jade LR provides high-performance long-range tactical thermal imaging under the most demanding surveillance conditions. Fully military-qualified, the Jade LR features:

  • Compact "Ruggedized" Housing
  • Mid-Wave Infrared (3-5 µm) Spectral Response
  • Triple Field-of-View Optics (wide 25 mm, medium 60 mm, narrow 320 mm)
  • Combat Vehicle Detection at a range exceeding 17 km
  • Simple Operation via Handheld Controller

"Tune" Cameras to the ALS-20 Using Optical Filters

Visible light can actually cause problems in some critical Security and Surveillance applications. Low-light CCD cameras typically utilize automatic gain control (AGC); when a bright light source enters the scene (like vehicle headlights), the camera "gains down" to prevent overexposure or "blooming" effects. Unfortunately, image quality usually suffers and detail is lost in the "dimmed" scene. Visible light interference can negatively impact applications like Port Security, Perimeter Surveillance for Public Utilities and Airports, etc.

The ALS-20 generates approximately 20 Watts of output power at a wavelength of about 810 nm. Use an optical interference filter to cut off light below 800 nm and above 820 nm to ensure that the CCD camera only "sees" the illumination produced by the ALS-20 IR Illuminator. The filter (typically mounted between the CCD camera and the objective lens) will effectively eliminate those bright visible light sources that cause the camera to "gain down."

DAY / NIGHT IMAGING
Use an optical interference filter centered on the ALS-20's 810 nm output to image scenes illuminated evenly and consistently under all ambient conditions.

FACIAL RECOGNITION
Use an optical interference filter centered on the ALS-20's 810 nm output to eliminate shadows and lighting level variations that limit the effectiveness of facial identification systems. With 20 Watts of power, the ALS-20 can cast illumination into an automobile's interior to "light up" the driver's face "invisibly" or covertly (no danger of distracting or blinding the driver) while the optical filter works to reduce visible light glare/reflections on the windshield.
